oh wow. i was thinking about a line from a fic where the doctor reads martha's mind, and listening to a harry potter podcast when they had a listener question from someone named martha talking about occlumency and whether other death eaters like barty crouch junior might have learned it in Azkaban...

*shiver down back*

has anyone else out there had an experience where one fandom reflects something from another fandom?

That was beautiful.

I just finished watching, so I’m still crying but I’ll start from the beginning again and go through it.

First of all, GO MARTHA! Girl really stepped up to the plate in this episode. The Doctor really was “rubbish as a human.” And I liked how he was so surprised by Martha’s directions that it took Joan (good ol’ joan!) to save all of the village people. That one line about escorting his lady friend was really nice. The desperation and resignation on her face… it’s like the look Jack Harkness had before he died (the first time).

I have to admit I screamed at the computer when he started ringing the bell. I have watched enough old movies to know what that meant before he said it, so I think I missed the line where he actually admits he’s sending these boys to war.

Was anyone else creeped out by that little girl? And that stupid red ballon!!

I thought the guy who played Baines was really good in this episode. The odd turning, the sniffing, the affected mannerisms. Wonderful acting.

God that was a lot of scarecrows! And those poor boys readying themselves to fight! That happy music in the background totally didn’t help.

“And alien means not from abroad I take it” *chortles*

I love the condescending look on Joan’s face when Martha tells her about training. And the subsequent incredulity when Martha lists all the bones in her hand (which had perfect pronunciation from what I could make out… looks like someone’s been studying while traveling)

“Tell me about Nottingham” aww…

“Would you rather that? Am I not enough?” That line cemented exactly how human he is. David is brilliant! I completely forgot that this was really the Doctor at that moment. Until this point, I’d been referring to the man as Doctor-as-John in my head, but here it was John Smith. A good man who was in love and stuck in the middle of some bigger plans

It is so perfect how he can’t shoot. And the echo of the music from the first scene of Human Nature with the young children singing as the boys that were once laughing and playing are now crying and wiping away tears as they fight.

The scene in the forest with Joan and Martha: “I’m John Smith. That’s all I want to be. John Smith. With his life, and his job and his love. Why can’t I be John Smith? Isn’t he a good man?” *cry*

I love the inflection in Baines’ voice when he talks about how the four things will come to them

Hey! It’s the line from the trailer! “He’s wonderful” and the look on Martha’s face is gorgeous. The two-parter has really allowed Freema to explore the intricacies of the Doctor-Companion relationship when the Doctor is seemingly absent. Very well done.

Not that David is to be out done. The shocked look on his face when John starts talking like the Doctor is heart-breaking. “Is that how he talks?”

Poor Joan. The look on her face when John asks Martha about why she didn’t stop John from falling in love. “Falling in love? It didn’t even occur to him?”

“He is everything. He’s just everything to me. And he doesn’t even look at me! But I don’t care! Because I love him to bits.” That just about sums it up, doesn’t it?

The scene with the watch is beautiful. “He won’t love you.”
“If he’s not you, I don’t want him to.”

THE BUTTONS! I totally missed that! Wow! *facepalm* but that was clever. And the literal transition from John’s face to the Doctor’s was amazing. I could barely recognize the difference. I ean, obviously there’s technically no difference but by God I couldn’t tell! Brillant acting does that.

WOOT! Doctor’s back! *kiss*

“Run!”

The scenes with the punishment was heart breaking. It’s the Doctor, but all of him, even the parts we don’t love as much as the other. And Baines’ quiet resigned tone was pefect.

“Could you change back?” Joan, I cry for you.

“Will you?”

“No.” *checks faces* yup. Definitely crying.

“Come with me.” AH!

But the question… I would love to see more of Joan, but I don’t’ think we will. Which is really sad, because she’s this beautifully complex character that surprises you because you think she’s just the girl to make Martha jealous.

“Time we moved on.” Typical Doctor.

“I would’ve said anything to get you to change.” And the conversation that follows: funny as hell. Typical doctor. This is how I Know he’s back.

I wonder if/when we will see Tim again.

I love how Tim’s old himself in that last scene, but still has that watch through all the things he’s been through. “They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them. Nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” Beautiful line.

okay. that was... interesting. i loved satan's pit in season 2, but this was just too similar for my taste.

impossibly placed spaceship losing power, minimal crew with secrets, alien organism that attacks crew members and kills them off "one by one" and infects them, glowing eyes.

honestly, the only things different were a living sun instead of a gravity field around a black hole and the lack of writing on the infected person's face, and the lack of a conversation about the future between the Doctor and Companion. *sigh* RTD surely has not racked all of his imagination already? its only season 3 and they're repeating already! what are we supposed to do for season 4?!?

HOWEVER! as someone who promotes martha's relationship with the doctor, i am happy about the key. it took Rose a while before she got hers, and i take this as a sign that the Doctor is recovering. but the kiss at the end was pathetic not hot. i wonder if it made the Doctor think about how Rose attracted all these pretty boys.

another bit that has to be my favorite scene in the series so far (aside from the expelliarmus scene in episode 2, of course) has to be the silent separation. that was gorgeous. it is where i think that freema has shown off what she is capable of. and david shines brillantly once again. the terror, the hopelessness, the fear, ah that was brillant!

but yeah.. that's about it. my reaction. thanks so much to whoever posted the AVI upload link on tennant_love. people like you make the worlds of people like me (aka Americans with bad TV) go round.

Hello! I'm a newbie to the Doctor Who fandom as well as LiveJournal. I usually lurk about with reviews and comments on other fanfic, but decided to finally stick my neck out and write my one of my own.

It's a post-Doomsday fic about Rose, not terribly angsty. BUT I need a beta. If there's one thing I've learned from my experience in the Potter fandom, it is that you miss 99% of the mistakes you make. So if anyone is interested in beta-ing this one-shot (possibly to become the first in a line of snapshot entries) or beta-ing another (supposedly funnier) one-shot i'm writing for a ficathon, just drop me a line! I can take any level of criticism, so bring on the red pens!
